Padraig Pearce’s Cottage and Cultural Centre
Padraig Pearce lived in the local area, Ionad Cultúrtha an Phiarsaigh, Conamara He was one of the principal leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. Although his life was short he was a popular teacher, a successful writer and poet. He is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.
Marconi Radio Station and the Alcock and Brown landing Site.
Guglielmo Marconi was an Irish Italian pioneer of wireless telegraphy at the turn of the twentieth century. Among his many achievements was the establishment of the first regular transatlantic wireless telegraphy service in October 1907. This was accomplished by building 2 large transmitter/receivers. One at Grace Bay Nova Scotia and the other at Derrigimlagh Bog Marconi Radio Station near Clifden Connemara. Unlike the phone in your pocket which serves the same purpose and more. The 1907 radio stations were huge feats of engineering and construction. The Cliften station was such a prominent sturctute on the landscape that when John Allcock and Arthur Brown made the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June 1919, taking off from St John’s Newfoundland they used the station as a marker and planned nearby. Alcock and Brown landing site and Alcock and Brown Memorial. There is a car park nearby Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point- Derrigimlagh where you can park up and see the locations and take in the extensive interpretation.
It’s a leisurely and enjoyable walk, 3 or 4 km. But remember, this is the West of Ireland so bring a raincoat.
Trá Mhuire

Trá Mhuire is a picturesque beach with white sand, rock pools and plenty of places to relax, explore or have fun with.
The rock marked in the picture here is an ideal location to place a portable BBQ as the overhanging rock provides shelter from the wind to keep your BBQ nice and hot.
Please leave the beach as you would like to find it and take any rubbish away with you.
